Govil and Dipika: familiar iconsA first glance everything seems to be wrong with Ramayan, Ramanand Sagar's TV serial that started late January. Deities float around the sets flashing laser beams, Ram and Sita fall in love around a bush, Ram is always having his feet pressed by Lakshman, the Sita swayamvar goes on forever, Raja Janak's palace looks like it's been painted with cheap lurex paint and the clothes look like they've been dug out of some musty trunk in Chandni Chowk's costume rental shops. Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan has all the finesse of a high school function.

And yet seldom has a television serial aroused such a phenomenal response. In Meerut, where load-shedding was timed for Sunday mornings during Ramayan's transmission time, residents complained to the authorities and got their power back. In Umbergaon, where the serial is being shot, villagers drop down on their knees when they see hero Arun Govil because they feel Ram has come back. And paanwallas everywhere have started pulling down pictures of young starlets and pinning up those of Arun Govil - who plays Ram - with his beatific half smile. In Bombay, the Sagars have been deluged with fan mail.
One man sent Sagar a cheque for Rs 5,000 for the videotapes of the serial to give to his daughter as dowry. A woman wrote to say that she makes her blind son touch the television set every time Ramayan is on because she thinks he will get his eyesight back. And another man said that after seeing I he serial his son had begun to press his legs just as Ram does his father's. Whatever its merits, Sagar's Sunday morning epic is being awarded the sanctity of the original. A scene from the serial: Tacky setsAs television rating points have been climbing steadily upward - according to the Indian Market Research Bureau there has been a sharp upward trend and viewership has doubled since the serial started, even in metros like Madras - Sagar has got more fame than he ever has for his hit films before. He is also going to make a lot of money.
Although he refuses to talk about it, he is reported to charge around Rs 3 to 4 lakh per episode, which means by the time Ram comes back to Ayodhya after 52 episodes, Sagar should have billed over Rs 1.5 crore. But as he insists: 'The commercial aspect is not important to me. This is my mission.' He has sold rights of Ramayan to Mauritius and is negotiating with both the US and the Soviet Union. He will also put videotapes of Ramayan on the market, at a whopping Rs 5,000 a set, and as he says modestly: 'Then we will make money.' Ramayan has always been special to Sagar.
For 25 years he has met with a group of friends for weekly readings of the epic but he never dreamt he could actually film it. 'It's like cupping your palms and trying to drink up the ocean,' he said. Till television opened up exciting new possibilities. He had seen on balmy autumn evenings the crowds that the Ramlilas drew and he knew he had a hit on his hands. On TV he got the power to use Ram like he had never been used before. Always seen before from a distance.
Sagar brings us close up: we seethe half-smile on Ram's face, his clothes, his living quarters. Shivanandan Foundation's Swami Mahadevanand told Ravivar. ' Ramayan touches my soul, my heart cries with it and I feel as if I am participating in it.'
Ramayan is not a religious serial at all. It is a morality play, a love story, a soap opera gift-wrapped in godliness. Whichever way, Ram is a best seller. The story has perennial appeal. Sanjiv Shukla, a viewer from Agra whose family takes off its shoes and folds its hands when the serial comes on, says: 'You know the story, you know that Ram is going to pick up the dhanush but still you wait.
The suspense is retained.' And Sagar has certainly read his Ramayan, 14 different versions of it. He brings to the serial interesting and little known details about the work: that Lakshman is really quite a cheeky little thing, that Kekayi was a good woman who was initially overjoyed to hear of Ram's marriage, that Sita falls into a dilemma when she first spots Ram about whether to go along with her father's archaic idea of the swayamvar. Ashok Kumar as the sutradhaar ties the whole thing in a pink bow when he steps in at the end, dark glasses and all, and relates the past with the present.
It is to Sagar's credit that many good values - obedience, discipline, loyalty - do come through. He also uses his poetic licence to champion social evils like dowry. So Dashrath tells Janak: 'You are greater than I am, I am only a beggar standing at your door asking for your daughter.' Says Sangeeta Mathur, 28, from Delhi: 'This moralising could get on people's nerves, but it doesn't. You wait and see, it will change our whole generation.' Ramanand Sagar directing: Sanctified missionAnother thing that has appealed to viewers everywhere is the music.
'The chaupaiyans are so beautiful, so melodious, the stanzas are perfectly balanced,' says Vijay Kaushish, who like many good Brahmin boys grew up singing the same tunes in his aangan. 'Ram is a Hindu concept simply because we've claimed him.
For Ram himself there was no religion.' The serial should sell the world over because it is a milestone of Indian culture. These are also sensitive times when the country is perturbed about Ramjanmabhoomi and is especially responsive to Ram. So remarkable, indeed, has been the reaction to mythology - there are over 500 Ramayan clubs in the US and Canada - that, according to Kaushish, it won't be surprising if even conservative European TV companies buy the serial.
As Sagar says:' I m ay die but your children will be watching my cassette.' Now that he's sitting pretty, Sagar can smile. But he's had his problems. Like most religious serials, Ramayan has had its share of controversy too. There have been complaints about its poor production qualities - the papier mache pillars, the cheap sets, the miracle-a-minute, low grade stars and Dipika, who plays Sita - the most sacred woman in Hindu mythology - had been seen before in a bath-tub. It is said that Sita's skimpy attire was even discussed in Parliament.
The serial was dismissed as filmi, sacrilegious, and fostering blind faith. But as one viewer said: 'Being a film man Sagar can hardly help his filminess. But he is certainly entertaining.' For Doordarshan itself, the argument is simple. 'We've got a good programme and we are getting good revenues,' says B.L. Khurana, director audience research.
And Madhumalati, controller of sales admits: 'Advertisers are vying with each other to get a spot on the Ramayan time.' Life has changed for Ramanand Sagar. He will not touch meat or liquor for the entire duration of the serial.
He has transported 10 cooks to Umbergaon to prepare vegetarian food for the 150 crew members who are stationed in this tiny hamlet for the first 15 days of every month and who must also abstain. Life has also changed for the villagers since Ram came to Umbergaon.
Said Govil: 'I never thought I'd become a cult figure in rural areas. I feel embarrassed when old folks fall at my feet.' They keep pictures of Govil and Dipika - who incidentally wears high heels under her Sita's robes - in their houses and religiously garland them.
Encouraged by this response to mythology, the Sagars are now preparing to do a quickie on Hanuman called Jai Hanuman also to be shot in Umbergaon, Ram-rejanmabhoomi, and released later this year. Meanwhile, there is another film messiah waiting in the wings to move in as soon as Sagar exits from Doordarshan - B.R.Chopra with Mahabharata.
